Economics, as a discipline and as practiced at both the domestic and global levels, has undergone considerable changes in the last half century.  New paradigms and perspectives have emerged, making the study of the discipline more challenging.  Among the emerging issues are globalization and international competitiveness, poverty reduction strategies, capital markets, etc.  The focus of the Economics programme at the University of Cape Coast is to introduce students to these challenges and to equip them with skills that will enable them to understand theoretical issues in the discipline as well as formulate and implement research designs and so contribute to the search for solutions to the problems of underdevelopment.

The Department is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, which also includes the Department of Sociology, the Department of Geography and Tourism, and the Centre for Development Studies.  The Department has close connections with Hull University, U.K., the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands, and Northeastern University at Boston.  The Department comprises about fifteen academics who research across the major areas of mainstream economics, about ten senior research assistants who assist with tutorials and research chores, and about ten yearly allocation of national servicemen.  The Department offers a range of Bachelors and Masters degrees and a fledgeling doctoral programme in areas of mainstream economics, and economics of technology and development.
